You are not alone.
Everyone struggles with the question "Should I keep this?" when they are trying to get organized. Sorting through all those items that fill up our homes, our lives, and our minds can be overwhelming. So much so that many of us give up, feeling defeated.
I should keep this because I paid good money for it.
I should keep this because I can sell it and make money from it.
I should keep this because someone special gave it to me.
I should keep this because I might need it in the future.
I have no idea why, but I should keep this.
Are these thoughts helping you toward your goal of getting organized? Of getting control over your environment and your life? How about trying these instead?
Is this moving me toward my current goals?
Is this adding value to my life now?
How do I feel when I see this? Is that an emotion I want more of?
Do I use this often?
Would I acquire this now, if I didn't already have it?
You get to decide what stays and what goes - and you deserve to have things around you that support your vision of how you want your life to be. Change is difficult, it just is. But, one year from now would you rather be just one year older, or one year older and that much closer to the life you want to be living?
